Image Capture

A system such as VASARI , with its exact registration, can easily take many sub-images of a painting, for which the exact coordinates will be known. In our implementation the painting was repositioned by hand, limiting the number of sub-images we could feasibly take. For our first attempt at archiving, we took four sub-images of the painting with approximately 2 inches of overlap on each side between them. This proved to be not nearly enough for our mosaicing software. We next tried a 3 by 3 set for a total of 9 subimages. These overlapped by nearly 50 percent on each side between them, and worked much better with the software. We also tried a 4x4 set of 16 images, but there was no visible improvement over the 3x3 set. We therefore used the 3x3 set for the rest of the manipulations.

The sole source of illumination for these images was the fixed light source attached to the camera mount. This light was incident to the painting at 45 degrees, projected from either side.
