In this report a face recognition software implemented in Matlab will be presented.
Object detection is one of the hottest research topics in image processing due to its wide rage of applications: ranging from industrial applications to security.
Object detection from photos is more challenging than one could imagine. Our brain has evolved to become a very efficient machine extracting context information and correlating shapes with previously seen objects. However, it is much more difficult to program software that can effectively carry out this task.
Face recognition is an interesting case of object recognition for its practical applications in daily life like tracking someone by means of security systems, or simply organizing photosets.
The report will start doing a very quick overview of some of the previous work in face recognition. While the software presented here is not strictly based in any previous work, the inspiration for many ideas came from previous research. Then the detailed description of the processing will follow, and finally the limitations of the software and future improvements will be shown.
