How do autostereograms work? Autostereogram
pictures are made up of patterns repeated across the width of the page.
When our eyes diverge, as we focus through the picture, each eye views
adjacent repeats of the pattern. The
brain is fooled in believing that both eyes are viewing the same thing, yet the
patterns are slightly distorted on each repeat.
Human perception takes over and the brain concludes that the slightly
different images arise from viewing a three dimensional object, and thus the 3D
illusion is produced. Sounds
magical? Sounds Confusing?
A closer look on how stereograms are created will clear things up.
