Efficient Measurement and Correction Techniques for Lens Distortion

Lens design is inherently a process of compromise between not only the specifications of the lens but also between different aberrations. In many cases it appears that high distortion is tolerated to achieve low cost or long zoom range. The methods described here shows that, fortunately, distortion is easy to measure and correct digitally. Even with a rudimentary setup, we have achieved perceivable correction. The correction process could be incorporated directly into the firmware of a digital camera. This would allow more freedom in designing the lens while still producing an excellent image quality.
