There are 3 ways of generating white light with LEDs. The first way is to use several RGB LEDs, a technique used in the LED displays seen previously. The other two ways are to use a short wavelength LED and phosphors to generate the remaining wavelengths. The common white LEDs on the market today use the inexpensive third method above which is a blue LED with a yellow phosphor. By far, the most popular manufacturer of white LEDs is Nichia.
