Motivation

In order to focus an image, analog cameras have traditionally required an additional sensor to measure the object distance before taking a picture. In practice, such additional sensors increase the overhead and cost needed to build analog cameras.

With the advent of digital cameras, the rapidly evolving digital multimedia trend in recent years has caused technology to move towards image processing as a preferred means of focusing images (as opposed to using an additional sensor). We chose auto-focusing as our project in order to investigate some of the algorithms used by digital cameras to focus images. We were also interested in finding out which algorithms worked better than others, and why.
