Cracquelure, or tiny cracks in the paint, is a result of the stress on a painting when it is being moved. The VASARI scanner can detect cracks to as small as 0.1 mm. A scan of a painting before it is moved to an exhibition, and a scan afterwards, can determine any new damage to the painting. Software has been developed that will extract the craquelure pattern from images by digital filtering and morphological analysis. Below is an example where the cracquelure pattern is manipulated to create a smooth image.
